Revenge Of The Savage Planet Developers Talk Mysterious Fifth Planet
The developers of Revenge of the Savage Planet delve into the enigmatic fifth planet, exploring its role in the game's evolving story, new environments, and gameplay mechanics.
A Neon-Lit Arcade World Hidden Within the Game
When Revenge of the Savage Planet was first announced, Raccoon Logic revealed that players would have access to four planets to explore, along with a secret, fifth planet awaiting discovery. Now, the developers are teasing out the details of this mysterious world, with a unique 1990s arcade aesthetic and a focus on indoor environments. It promises to be the most savage—and the most surprising—planet yet.
We sat down with Revenge of the Savage Planet’s creative director, Alex Hutchinson, and audio director, Cameron Jarvis, to learn more about this intriguing fifth planet. Though the developers were careful not to spoil too much of the gameplay, they dropped some hints about its design, music, and the cyber-enhanced creatures awaiting players.
A "Lair-Based" World Unlike Any Other
Q: Where did the idea for a 90s arcade-themed planet come from?
Hutchinson: Without giving too much away, players who fully explore the core four planets will eventually uncover the means to access this hidden world. Unlike the others, it feels like a place that has been artificially constructed. Why? You’ll have to play to find out.
Q: How did designing a mostly indoor "lair-based" planet differ from creating the other worlds in the game?
Hutchinson: In Revenge, we encourage players to explore the game in their own way. There’s always a central quest, but players have the freedom to stray from it and tackle challenges as they see fit. Developing the fifth planet, however, was a bit different. The ‘shrines’ scattered across the world present specific challenges for the player to overcome. It’s a great opportunity to mix up the gameplay and push players to approach tasks in unique ways.
A Unique 90s Soundtrack for the Mysterious Fifth Planet
Q: What musical influences shaped the soundtrack for the fifth planet?
Jarvis: For the shrines, we really wanted a departure from the rest of the game’s sound. The outdoor maps feature acoustic guitars and banjos for a more organic feel. But for the fifth planet, we allowed our composer to really let loose with synths and harsh electric guitar tones. It was about creating a stark contrast and matching the artificial nature of the shrines. It also gave the planet its own distinct, energetic vibe.
Cyber-Enhanced Creatures Await
As with any Savage Planet world, the fifth planet is teeming with strange and dangerous creatures, many of which have undergone cybernetic enhancements. Players can expect to encounter familiar critters with new, futuristic upgrades—think laser beam visors, gun turrets, and plasma shields. Some of these creatures can even fly, giving players new vertical challenges to face.
Q: Can you tell us more about the creatures we’ll encounter on the fifth planet? Are they robotic in nature?
Hutchinson: Yes! The creatures on this planet are cyber-enhanced versions of those players have already seen in the game. Some of them have been given tech upgrades like laser beams and shields. And we’ve even got a few flying creatures, like an airborne puffer with laser beam eyes. It’s going to be wild!
Revenge of the Savage Planet’s fifth planet promises to bring players on a journey through a neon-lit world full of secrets, strange creatures, and unique gameplay challenges. From its 90s arcade aesthetic to its cyber-enhanced enemies, it’s clear that this hidden world will offer a truly savage adventure unlike anything players have encountered before.
