Revenge Of The Savage Planet Developers Talk Mysterious Fifth Planet
Explore a Neon-Lit Arcade World Full of Cyber-Creatures and Surprises in the Upcoming Sequel
Raccoon Logic, the team behind Journey to the Savage Planet, has revealed tantalizing details about the mysterious fifth planet in its upcoming sequel, Revenge of the Savage Planet. While players will explore four familiar worlds, there’s one hidden planet that promises to be unlike anything seen before. With a neon-lit "1990s arcade" aesthetic and an emphasis on indoor, lair-like environments, this fifth planet may just be the wildest and most savage of them all.
Game Rant had the opportunity to chat with Revenge of the Savage Planet creative director Alex Hutchinson and audio director Cameron Jarvis about the intriguing new world. While the developers were careful not to spoil too much, they did drop some exciting hints about the inspiration behind this world, its music, and the bizarre creatures players can expect to encounter. For those who’ve played Journey to the Savage Planet, this new addition will offer plenty of surprises in its neon-drenched depths.
The Fifth Planet: A World of Arcade Vibes and Internal Lairs
In a previous interview, Alex Hutchinson described Revenge of the Savage Planet as an "optimistic dystopia," where the player, after being laid off from Alta Interglobal, begins a new life exploring the planets. But the excitement of exploration is laced with something sinister lurking beneath the surface. This eerie sense of foreboding is most apparent on the fifth planet, where players will venture into the heart of an unknown being’s lair, all while receiving chilling messages like “Come play with me.”
Q: Where did the idea of a 90s/arcade-themed planet first come from?
Hutchinson: It’s a bit tricky to explain without giving too much away, but players who fully explore the four main planets will find ways to access the fifth world. Unlike the others, this one seems almost hand-built. Why it’s like that… well, you’ll have to play to find out!
Q: How was designing a planet primarily made of indoor "lair-like" spaces different from the others? Any unique challenges?
Hutchinson: One of the things we really enjoy about Revenge is that it lets players approach the game in their own way. There's a core quest to follow, but you can wander off and explore at your own pace. This means there are many different ways to tackle challenges. We also wanted to spice things up with special objectives. The ‘shrines’ we’ve incorporated provide opportunities for players to face specific challenges, which should add some variety to the gameplay.
Q: The music on this fifth planet is going to be really unique—what were the inspirations behind its 90s arcade sound?
Jarvis: When we started working on the music for the shrines, we decided to contrast it sharply with the rest of the game. In the outdoor areas, we leaned into more acoustic sounds like guitar and banjo. For the shrines, we went all in on walls of synths, harsh electric guitar, and bright, aggressive tones. It gave the planet a cool, synthetic vibe that fit perfectly with the idea of these shrines being an artificial addition to the otherwise untouched alien system.
New Creatures and Cybernetic Enhancements Await
No world in the Savage Planet series is complete without its critters, and the mysterious fifth planet is no exception. This world is packed with cyber-enhanced versions of the creatures players have already encountered. Expect to see critters outfitted with laser beam visors, gun turrets, and plasma shields, all while some of them have even gained the ability to fly. One can only imagine what kind of wild interactions players will have with these upgraded creatures—some may even help you reach new heights!
Q: Can you tell us anything about the creator of this "Den of Fun"? He sounds a lot like a maniacal game show host!
Hutchinson: The creator of the shrines is a central mystery of the game. We wanted to explore the idea that in a world filled with real problems, entertainment and distraction could be what ultimately leads to your undoing. There’s a lot more to discover about who created the shrines and their motivations, but you’ll have to play to get the full picture.
Q: Any hints about the creatures we’ll find on the fifth planet? Are they robotic?
Hutchinson: Absolutely! The creatures on the fifth planet are cyber-enhanced versions of the creatures you've encountered in the main game. These critters have been upgraded with strange and cool technology—laser beams, gun turrets, plasma shields, and more. And some of them can fly now! Picture an airborne puffer fish with laser beam eyes—that’s the kind of madness you’ll find here.
The fifth planet in Revenge of the Savage Planet promises to be a vibrant and dangerous new world to explore, filled with cyber-enhanced creatures, arcade-inspired music, and a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from the rest of the game’s planets. Whether you're a veteran of Journey to the Savage Planet or a newcomer, the mysterious fifth world will provide plenty of new challenges and surprises to discover. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure when Revenge of the Savage Planet releases!
