Manchester City Target Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush in Potential Blockbuster Transfer
The Egyptian forward is enjoying a breakout Bundesliga season, attracting interest from Europe's top clubs, including Manchester City.
Omar Marmoush has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s standout performers this season, propelling Eintracht Frankfurt toward their first top-four finish in over 30 years. His stellar form has put several elite European clubs on high alert, with Premier League champions Manchester City reportedly among his biggest suitors.
Who is Omar Marmoush?
Born in Cairo in 1999, Marmoush began his career at Egyptian club Wadi Degla before moving to Germany in 2017, joining Wolfsburg’s reserve team. Loan spells at St Pauli and Stuttgart helped him develop, and he eventually secured a move to Frankfurt in 2023.
Despite early struggles adapting to German football, Marmoush has flourished at Frankfurt, scoring 12 goals in 29 league games last season. His agent, Ahmed Abdoun, credited Marmoush’s ability to speak German, French, and English as a key factor in his success.
Internationally, Marmoush chose to represent Egypt despite being eligible for Canada through his father. He made his debut alongside Mohamed Salah in 2021, scoring the winner against Libya in AFCON qualifying.
A Breakout Bundesliga Season
The 2024-25 season has been nothing short of spectacular for Marmoush. The Egyptian forward has netted 15 Bundesliga goals, trailing only Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. He also leads the league with 10 assists in 17 matches, making him one of Europe’s most productive attackers.
Across all competitions, Marmoush has 20 goals, including four in the Europa League and one in the DFB-Pokal. His 25 goal contributions rank second among players in Europe’s top five leagues, behind only Mohamed Salah.
Praise from Coaches and Comparisons to Salah
Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller lauded Marmoush’s relentless drive, stating: “Omar always wants to win, whether it’s a Bundesliga match or a training session.” Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany also praised the Egyptian, calling him a player “who is only going to get better with time.”
Despite frequent comparisons to Salah, the Liverpool star has urged caution, saying: “Omar has great potential, but comparisons will only put pressure on him. Let him build his own career.”
Which Clubs Are Interested in Marmoush?
Marmoush is under contract with Frankfurt until 2027, but his performances have made him a prime target for major clubs. Reports indicate Manchester City are considering a move before the transfer window closes on February 3. However, City face competition from Arsenal and even Liverpool, who may look to pair him with Salah.
Frankfurt’s sporting director Markus Krösche confirmed interest in Marmoush but declined to name the club. “A team has expressed interest, but we’re not at the stage of making a decision yet.”
Potential Transfer Fee
Sky Sports reports that Frankfurt is demanding a fee of €80 million ($82 million) for Marmoush, though Krösche refused to confirm the valuation. “We’ve said we want to keep this team together, but if exceptional circumstances arise, we’d have to consider it.”
If Marmoush moves, it would be Frankfurt’s second major transfer in recent seasons, following Randal Kolo Muani’s €95 million ($103 million) move to PSG in 2023.
What’s Next for Marmoush?
His agent, Abdoun, confirmed that Marmoush is open to a move but emphasized that a final decision will depend on offers from all interested clubs. “The Bundesliga has always been a stepping stone to the Premier League or La Liga. If a suitable offer arrives, we will discuss it with Frankfurt and make the best decision.”
With the January transfer window nearing its end, all eyes are on Marmoush and whether he will make the leap to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
