LaplandUK to Open Second Site at Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire
LaplandUK, the popular Christmas event, has received approval to establish a second site at Capesthorne Hall, a historical country house near Macclesfield. The plan was approved by Cheshire East Council, marking the start of a new festive tradition that will run for the next decade.
The event, named Lapland Manchester, is expected to create around 1,200 temporary jobs each year and bring significant economic benefits to the region. This new location will complement the existing LaplandUK experience, a fully immersive theatrical Christmas event held annually in Swinley Forest, Ascot.
Marketing Cheshire highlighted the substantial economic impact the new site could have, describing it as a "fantastic opportunity" to showcase Cheshire and boost local businesses. The event will draw visitors from far and wide, benefiting shops, hotels, and hospitality venues in the area.
Despite some concerns about the impact on the green belt, particularly on the setting of the Grade II-listed Capesthorne Hall, the proposal was approved by councillors. While Conservative councillor Stewart Gardiner expressed reservations about the environmental impact, he acknowledged the potential benefits. Other councillors, including Lesley Smetham, supported the application, noting the positive reception from the local parish council and the potential for job creation in the community.
Labour councillor Heather Seddon welcomed the economic opportunities, particularly for part-time work, although she raised concerns about traffic management. Independent councillor Hannah Moss, who visited the Ascot location, emphasized the potential for increased footfall and its positive impact on the local economy.
The planning application passed with overwhelming support, with eight votes in favor and two against.
Cristian Marcucci, managing director of Marketing Cheshire, described the development as a "real coup" for the area, adding that it would enhance the visitor economy, which contributes around £3.9bn annually to Cheshire and Warrington. The new site is expected to open later this year, bringing a festive boost to the region's economy and further establishing Cheshire as a key holiday destination.
