Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Immerses Players in the Political Turmoil of Kuttenberg’s Silver Rush
Warhorse Studios Takes a Deep Dive into Medieval Bohemia’s Struggles for Wealth and Power in Its Upcoming Sequel
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is set to bring players face-to-face with the political intrigues and economic upheaval of medieval Bohemia, with the city of Kuttenberg taking center stage. Although it’s not the sole location to be explored, Kuttenberg stands as the game’s largest urban area and will be a pivotal point in both the narrative and gameplay. As the heart of the story, players will find themselves deeply immersed in the city’s dramatic power struggles, influenced by both historical events and the game’s rich setting.
In an exclusive interview with Warhorse Studios' PR manager, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, Game Rant gained insight into how Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 weaves Kuttenberg’s historical significance into its gameplay, shedding light on the city’s role in stirring the conflict over wealth and power during this tumultuous period of medieval history.
Kuttenberg: A City Shaped by Silver and Strife
Kuttenberg, or Kutná Hora as it is known in Czech, was one of medieval Europe’s most important cities, thanks to its lucrative silver mines. This wealth brought both immense economic prosperity and political power to the region, turning Kuttenberg into a battleground for control and influence. As the silver rush unfolded, the city’s newfound affluence ignited conflict between the nobility and the growing entrepreneurial class, adding layers of complexity to the social fabric.
Stolz-Zwilling discussed how the silver mines in the region were central to the city's prominence, noting, "Everything revolved around silver, and ‘ordinary’ citizens were, more or less, able to achieve riches that had previously been the domain of the nobility. Naturally, this led to a clash as the aristocracy began to lose their grip on power, and common folk found themselves acting as entrepreneurs."
This blurring of class lines created a volatile atmosphere, one that the game embraces in full. Players will experience the social tensions that arose from this shift, particularly as the silver boom benefitted the lower classes, while intensifying division and unrest across the city.
The Personal and Political Drama of Kuttenberg
At the time Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is set, Kuttenberg is under the control of King Sigismund of Hungary, adding another layer of political intrigue to the already intense class struggle. This occupation, along with the lingering memory of Sigismund’s role in the murder of protagonist Henry’s parents, will undoubtedly complicate Henry’s journey through the city.
Stolz-Zwilling shared that the conflict over which king to support, a deeply divisive issue for the people of Bohemia, will serve as a central theme: "In 1403, when the game takes place, Kuttenberg was already occupied by King Sigismund of Hungary. Henry will have to navigate the city carefully, all while the people of Bohemia remain divided on which monarch to support— the rightful yet idle king, or the seemingly strong invader."
This political unrest will be heightened by Henry’s personal vendetta against Sigismund, creating a complex web of motivations that players will need to untangle as they explore Kuttenberg’s streets.
A Layered and Realistic Historical World
With Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 aiming for a highly realistic representation of medieval Bohemia, players will be plunged into the rich tapestry of Kuttenberg’s political and economic upheaval. As they navigate this volatile environment, players will need to forge relationships, gain resources, and rise to prominence in a city where power and wealth are constantly in flux.
Warhorse Studios has set the stage for a deeply immersive experience where history, personal ambition, and political drama collide, making Kuttenberg the perfect backdrop for the next chapter of Henry’s journey in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
