Hindus Unite to Celebrate the Vibrant Navratri Festival in Greater Manchester
Thousands of Hindus from across Greater Manchester have gathered to celebrate the joyous festival of Navratri, marking a significant cultural occasion in the region.
The Wythenshawe Forum in Manchester is among the key venues hosting vibrant celebrations for the nine-night festival, which is known for its colorful displays, lively music, and energetic dancing.
Starting on October 3, Navratri honors Durga, the Hindu goddess who embodies strength, protection, and motherhood. She is revered for her victory over the demon Mahishasura, in a fierce battle that lasted nine days and nights.
Sunil Chauhan, from the Manchester Navratri Association, shared that the festival has only grown in popularity over the past 30 years. "It's heartening to see our community thriving while keeping our cultural traditions alive here in Manchester," he said.
Navratri’s name is derived from the Sanskrit words "nav," meaning nine, and "ratri," meaning nights, reflecting the festival’s duration and significance. Each day of the celebration is marked by a different color, representing one of Durga's unique qualities, adding to the vibrant spirit of the festivities.
