Four Dead in Russian Drone and Missile Strike on Kyiv
The early morning attack on Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district damages infrastructure and prompts metro station closure.
Kyiv, Ukraine – At least four people were killed in a Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, early Saturday morning. The strike targeted the central Shevchenkivskyi district, a busy area home to universities, bars, and restaurants.
Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration, confirmed the deaths and detailed the damage in the heart of the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to stay in shelters, warning of an ongoing “ballistic missile threat” and stating that air defenses were actively protecting the capital.
The attack caused extensive damage in Shevchenkivskyi, including the shattering of windows in buildings and at the entrance to the Lukianivska metro station, which was temporarily closed. Local media reported that explosions were heard at around 6:00 AM (04:00 GMT), followed by the sounds of anti-aircraft fire. Smoke was seen rising from a residential building hit by the blasts.
The Ukrainian Air Force later announced that it had successfully intercepted and destroyed 24 drones and two ballistic missiles launched as part of the same assault.
Meanwhile, in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces targeted the city center, injuring two people. Ivan Fedorov, the regional governor, reported that a building at an industrial facility had been partially destroyed during the attack.
The attack on Kyiv comes amid increased Ukrainian aerial assaults on Russian military and energy infrastructure. Ukraine’s military has recently carried out successful strikes on Russian oil depots, including two significant attacks on a facility near a Russian airbase in the Saratov region, which sparked large fires.
In a separate incident late Friday, a Ukrainian drone strike on the town of Lyudinovo in Russia’s Kaluga region ignited a fire at an industrial site. According to regional governor Vladislav Shapsha, the fire caused damage to an oil storage depot, but no casualties were reported.
The escalating conflict continues to affect both countries, with the toll on civilian infrastructure and lives growing as attacks intensify on both sides.
